A consortium led by Qatar's UCC Holding will develop a 1-gigawatt solar power plant in southern Syria, as part of a US$7 billion infrastructure reconstruction agreement with the government.
Syria’s Ministry of Energy signed a memorandum of understanding on the project at a recent ceremony in Damascus.
The consortium is led by UCC Holding, through its subsidiary UCC Concessions Investment, a Qatari company specializing in energy concessions and construction. The consortium includes Power International USA, which specializes in strategic energy investments; Turkish renewable energy investor and developer Kalyon GES Enerji Yatırımları; and Turkish energy development and operation company Cengiz Enerji.
In addition to the solar project, the MOU involves the construction of four combined-cycle gas turbine ( CCGT ) power plants with a combined capacity of around 4GW. The facilities will be located in Traifawi, Zayzoun, Deir-Azzour, and Mehardeh.
The gas-fired power plants are projected to be completed within three years, while the solar facility is expected to be delivered in under two years.
